Fighting games reward patience and pattern recognition more than raw reflexes. Start by learning your character’s frame data for their fastest normal moves — knowing which button beats which in a trade will win you more rounds than any flashy combo. Next, practice blocking on reaction instead of guessing; most beginners lose because they panic and mash rather than reading their opponent’s spacing.
Footsies matter more than combos early on. Whiff-punishing — waiting for an opponent to throw out a move and missing, then punishing the recovery — is a skill that carries across every fighting game you’ll ever play. Spend time in training mode drilling your character’s bread-and-butter combo until it’s automatic, so your brain is free to focus on the actual match instead of execution.
Finally, review your replays. Most players never rewatch their losses, which means they repeat the same mistakes indefinitely. Ten minutes of replay review after a session teaches you more than an hour of blind grinding.
